Theft Cont.; CC Abuses Creative Commons License
“As using sounds produced on unusual 8-bit systems and game consoles grows in popularity, some artists are appropriating the music as their own. Sometimes, as with Beck, a well-known or better-marketed artist is using lesser-known artists for purposes of novelty. That alone has riled some in the hard-core chiptune community. In some cases, though, artists are resorting to outright theft. In the most recent case, part of the problem is people misunderstanding Creative Commons licenses, even though those licenses are designed to encourage sharing.
Is Creative Commons a safe license to use, or does it encourage this kind of theft? I think CC is actually a solution, not part of the problem – and this illustrates that. Read more

Crystal Castles Caught Up in Artwork Controversy
Source: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/50168-crystal-castles-caught-up-in-artwork-controversy
“If you’ve attended a Crystal Castles show in the last couple years, in between all the strobe flashes you may have encountered the image up there. Perhaps you saw it on a t-shirt, or, if you made it to one of the really early CC shows, on a 7″. Or maybe you picked up a copy of the “banned cover edition” of Crystal Castles’ debut LP that Last Gang Records was selling for a minute.
That image there was created by UK-born, Tokyo-dwelling artist Trevor Brown (link NSFW)– using Madonna’s likeness, of course. Here’s where things get sticky. According to Torontoist, the members of Crystal Castles, Alice Glass and Ethan Kath, allegedly found the image (without a credit) on a flyer a couple years ago. They took to using it on t-shirts and the aforementioned limited run 7″, under the assumption that if it got around enough, the artist behind it would step forward, and some kind of usage/payment agreement could be reached. Pitchfork Review: Rating: 7.8

Crystal Castles prefer traveling light. While the hotly-tipped and already hotly-contested Toronto duo’s basement party set-up doesn’t look like it’ll fill up the passenger seat on a tour van, they also like to play fast and loose with their associations. They’ve remixed at a Hot Chip-like pace for everyone from Bloc Party to Uffie to Klaxons, but they’re not a part of your nu-rave genre (really, who is?), or blog house for that matter. Their debut LP partly picks from 7″ and 12″s that have been available in some format since 2005, and it’s every bit as difficult to pin down. Read more

Secret Identity of CC’s “Ethan” Revealed!
Here’s an interesting article I found while fighting off people who do not wish this site would be mentioned on the CC wiki, anyway crystalcastles.org reports to the public unbiasedly and in no favor of no-one:

Just when you thought Punk’d died with Ashton Kutcher’s career, it appears there is a new prankster in town, who’s been punking journalists for the last few years.
Ethan Kath, producer/instrumentalist for Toronto’s Crystal Castles, recently spoke with Exclaim!, admitting, “We used to have our friends do our interviews and we instructed them to make up stupid stories and names. My name isn’t Claudio – that’s one of my roommates. Our roommates’ names would get into interviews, and we’d go somewhere and a fan would be, “Hey Conrad, how’s it going?” Another time I’m Clint, and Claudio… But my name’s Ethan.” Read more

CC Cancel Tour Dates After Car Accident
source: http://www.exclaim.ca/articles/generalarticlesynopsfullart.aspx?csid1=0&csid2=844&fid1=30148
Post A Comment“In a blow to West coast Crystal Castles fans, the Toronto-based duo have cancelled a string of tour dates after singer Alice Glass was involved in car accident late last week.
In an interview with NME, band-mate Ethan Kath said, “We’re on tour and it’s a bit of a disaster. Alice broke her ribs in a car accident. The doctor said she needs six weeks off but she wants to start playing again next week.”
Since the incident, Glass has been released from hospital and the electro outfit plan to take the stage again at SXSW before joining tour-mates HEALTH on the road.
Despite the Crystal Castles’ setback, HEALTH will move up to the status of headliners and continue to play the dates as scheduled minus Glass and Kath.”

Crystal Castles Postpone Shows Due to Injury
Source: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/49090-crystal-castles-postpone-shows-due-to-injury
Post A Comment“What is it with young bands and car accidents these days? Not yet a week after news of the hit-and-run involving Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson, Crystal Castles have postponed a handful of tour dates because of a car accident involving lead singer Alice Glass.
Glass is suffering from two cracked ribs and will take the next week to recover. However, tourmates HEALTH will soldier on with their recently launched trek. Crystal Castles will resume playing out with their appearances at SXSW, after which they will rejoin HEALTH on the road.
If everything goes according to plan, Glass’ recovery will coincide with the March 18 release of Crystal Castles’ self-titled debut on Last Gang.”

Exclaim! Interview

“URB wrote this about the band: “Crystal Castles barely exist. They formed by chance, they never practice and they supposedly hate performing live.”
How much of that is true?

None of that is true. We used to have our friends do our interviews and we instructed them to make up stupid stories and names. My name isn’t Claudio – that’s one of my roommates. Our roommates’ names would get into interviews, and we’d go somewhere and a fan would be, “Hey Conrad, how’s it going?” Another time I’m Clint, and Claudio… But my name’s Ethan.
